Where your application actually runs, and whose laws can reach it. We deploy to AWS in Ireland, to Hetzner in Germany and Finland, and to UK regions when data has to stay in Britain. "Sovereign hosting" is the shorthand for keeping both the data and the company holding it outside US jurisdiction.

European organisations are moving off American hyperscalers, and the reason is jurisdiction rather than geography. Data sitting in Dublin is still held by a US company, and the US CLOUD Act reaches US companies wherever their servers are. That distinction is the whole question, and most suppliers blur it into "hosted in the EU". Hetzner is a German company with German and Finnish data centres and no US parent, so it answers the sovereignty question outright. AWS in eu-west-1 gives you EU data residency with the operational depth of a hyperscaler, and remains US-owned. Neither is right for everyone, which is exactly why we ask instead of assuming.

We ask where your data must live before we design anything, because it shapes the architecture rather than the invoice. Public sector, healthcare and financial services work often needs UK-only residency; a business worried about US jurisdiction usually wants Hetzner. Deployment is containerised with Docker and Kamal into infrastructure in your own name, so the decision stays reversible and you are never stuck with whichever provider we happened to pick. Our own systems run the same way: the files uploaded through this site are stored in eu-west-1.
